Sullivan's original score was performed, after his death, at the National Thanksgiving for the end of the Boer War two years later, in 1902 at St Paul's Cathedral. It's unusual instrumentation, brass band, organ and strings meant that it fell into understandable neglect soon after. Had he lived, I am sure that Sullivan, ever the practical composer, would have produced a standard orchestral version to ensure more widespread performances by choral societies. Therefore I produced this version, retaining Sullivan's string orchestral parts but rearranging the organ and brass band for the usual woodwind and brass lineup: 2.2.2.2 and 4, 2, 3 1 plus Timpani. An optional 3rd trumpet is also provided.
Also a more useful piano/vocal score is available, to replace the original Novello vocal score with the more cumbersome 3 stave organ accompaniment.
