Written while studying Sostakovich quartets with the guidance of composition teacher Dimitri Smirnov, the work features 5 sections related thematically but distinct in style and performance. The opening dark evocatice section featuring double and triple stops leads to the lyrical theme followed by the development sections with its march like pizzicato pulses and fugue like conterpoint, and an atmospheric finale.
