The series of Rustic Suites for violin and cello duet, with the exception of preludes or fantasias, is based on rural dance rhythms and in many chromatic and diatonic modes.
QUICK EXPLANATION OF Mode SABAH
Mode Sabah as is known in Arabic terminology, is the third chromatic mode in a more simple and pragmatic classification of modes in equal temperament, because the chromatic tetrachord C-Db-E-F is built on the third degree of the mode in A. Its two main characteristics are:
1 It does not have a perfect but a diminished 4th as its fourth degree. In this area the diminished mode in A predominates in melodic movement.
2 It does not have a perfect but a diminished 8ve as its eighth degree in which area the chromatic mode in C predominates in melodic movement.
This suite in A minor (Sabah mode) has a prelude-fantasia and four dance rhythms of the Greek countryside as follows:
