This hymn tune is based on a melody by Christian Friedrich Witt, adapted by Henry John Gauntlett for the first edition of "Hymns Ancient & Modern" (1861). Gauntlett was a major figure in 19th century English church music and composed hundreds of hymn tunes, of which Irby ("Once in royal David's city") is the most well known. A somewhat more conventional descant (Descant no.1) may be found in "Related Scores".
