Buoyed by a Vienna apartment provided by a benefactor, in 1879 Bruckner no longer had to earn extra income and thus had more time for composing. Both the 6th Symphony and the String Quintet resulted from the generosity and both reflected a new-found serenity. The Adagio from the Quintet (string quartet with added viola) presaged the 7th Symphony's Adagio.
