The starkly contrasting sombre and light-hearted second movement is almost manic in nature. A shorter version of this was produced in 1979 for a local concert and premiered a year later. A few years on, it was completely reworked. When I completed this arrangement of this piece for my wife to play on her violin I expanded on the Classical structure by repetition of each section and with slight variations. I introduced the pizzicato variation by way of contrast. I believe it remains as an ideal school quartet piece as the day it was first performed and Im sure it would make a welcome fresh addition of new music for any school string players.
