This is the fourth movement of a 5-movement piece for string orchestra. I wrote it in 1990, when I was in hospital for a major operation and, bored out of my wits after surgery. Amongst the patients there were many injured soldiers. This movement represents these military people with their domineering and always rigid nature. I imagined these men on the battlefield responding to shouted orders and trumpet calls.
