The theme of this piece is the history of old Southern California. Joaquin Murieta was a real person who is said to be the inspiration for the Zorro stories, although to the Anglos of the California Gold Rush, he was nothing more than a brigand and horse thief. Murieta became the leader of a band of outlaws, all of whom were named Joaquin.
