Steal Away is a spiritual of the "signal" type; these songs were sung by African-american leaders as a signal of escape through the "underground railroad". Signal songs were also used to notify field workers of a secret worship service at a pre-arranged place, since plantation owners did not approve of community gatherings for slaves.
My church choir loves to use this a capella arrangement during Lent.
