The iconography in Roman Catholic churches always includes 14 'Stations' depicting the Way of the Cross. Contemplating Kevin Nichols' insightful meditations on these Stations of the Cross, I "heard" music (snatches of plainsong, Gaelic hymnody and Bach Passions). I sought Mgr. Nichols' permission to create accompanying music for his text. Upon hearing my work (in Cork, and in the Cathedral in Newcastle-upon Tyne) he suggested that I had 'seen' the events depicted 'through his eyes' as he 'heard the music through my ears'.The Double Bass suggests the ever-increasing effort in Christ's relentless plodding to Calvary, while the Clarinet bleakly comments on the terrible journey.
