There are doubts about the origin of this tune. It has been credited to John Francis Wade but Samuel Webbe (1714-1816) is most often named as its source. Webbe was a leading figure of Roman Catholic music in London, being the organist of the Sardinian Embassy Chapel and of the Portuguese Embassy, the only place in London where the Catholic liturgy could be celebrated publicly at that time. "St Thomas" appeared in his "Collection of Motetts or Antiphons" (1792).
