String players will know this little gem - the first movement of Holst's St. Paul's Suite. Gustav Holst was the music master at this famous London girls' school for almost 30 years and wrote many pieces for his students. Although the Jig has a distinctly “folky” feel I believe the melody is original (the last movement of the suite is the famous "Dargason" which uses traditional folk songs).
Judging by the manic way that professional string ensembles perform this you would believe the tempo instructions “as fast as possible” but I believe it has more style played at a less extreme tempo.
There are alternative Bb parts to cover the Eb and Alto Clarinets, and the 2nd bass and Contra parts are optional.
