The source of this song is an 18th century English folksong called "The Unfortunate Rake", and was evolved in the mid 1800's into a song entitled "The Gambler's Blues", and later into "St James Infirmary Blues" which has become an American standard blues number. It has been recorded by many notable artists, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Stan Kenton and Billie Holliday just to name a few. The added Horn parts are en lieu the 1st Trombone; and the Euphonium parts en lieu the 2nd Trombone. The quintet can be also augmented into larger ensembles with these instruments.
