Background:
Cannock Citadel S.A. Band has had a long tradition of good Trombone players, going back to the era when Maisie Wiggins, OBE was at the Corps as their Bandmaster.
This solo was written especially for the band, as it attempted to ‘show-off’ the skills of the Bass Trombone, instrumentally and vocally too!?
The solo also celebrates the traditions of Negro Spirituals, which continue to be songs people love to hear and sing.
Conductor notes:
The soloist needs to try and put some emotion into the beginning section, making sure the slowness of the tempo doesn’t sound drab.
The obligatos need to ensure the associated melodies are clear.
The second part of the solo plays itself, and should be light. The volume stays moderate for the accompaniment parts throughout, just to emphasise the need to hear the soloist.
