"The Voice" is a song-setting of Thomas Hardy's famous poem and was written at the request of a baritone friend who admired "Futility", the composer's baritone setting of the Wilfred Owen poem heard at a performance by a Birmingham Conservatoire student at a Central Composers' Alliance concert organised by its then chairman and co-founder Les Emmans.
