I was commissioned to write this for the Varndean training choir, who first performed it in a schools prom in Eastbourne. The words describe the ambivalent restless feeling of a bird about to migrate from England to Africa. The music is a mixture of African and European influences. The ambivalence is reflected in the metre, which blurs 3/4, 6/8 and 4/4 feel, especially in the short violin solo. The vocal line is mostly in unison with a couple of sections in 2 parts. There are instrumental parts for fl, cl, bsn, vln (with solo), vcl, cb, kbd, marimba and percussion.
