Song 789 Rosie
Lieutenant Coronel Robert Rosenthal USAAF
(June 11, 1917 – April 20, 2007)
Let me tell you a war time story now About a little shy reserved young man Who joined December eighth because he can A Manhattan lawyer that was so proud He gave it all up to fight in the clouds With the hundredth air force in old England This American Jew did take a stand And took the fight to the Nazis unbowed
Rosie flew through the hell of death filled skies When the lucky young men did twenty five The brave Brooklyn Jew flew fifty two times
On his third run in nineteen forty three In the first months of the B seventeen Flying from England when Rosie was green Bombing Munster in his flight of thirteen He alone returned from the brutal scene His plane shot up with a hole in the wing He would repeatedly do it again
Then there was September of forty four Rosie was downed over occupied France Broke his arm and nose and then did by chance Meet the free French then back to England’s shore Where he returned to fight a little sore Nothing would stop him from taking his stance To pierce the Nazi black heart on a lance So into Germany he did fly more
Rosie flew through the hell of death filled skies When the lucky young men did twenty five The brave Brooklyn Jew flew fifty two times
Flight fifty one was a memorable deed Lieutenant Coronel Rosenthal did lead To Berlin all of the B seventeen And on his final bomb run it was seen His plane was there hit but did not careen He flew on to drop his bombs on the scene Shot down the Russians returned him as free
By wars end sixteen medals He did see The Distinguished Service Cross there to be Silver Star with cluster for gallantry Distinguished Flying Cross he wore freely Air Medal with seven clusters for deeds Purple Heart for all those times he did bleed Distinguished Flying Cross from Britain’s King Crouix de Guerre from France his courage did bring
Rosie flew through the hell of death filled skies When the lucky young men did twenty five The brave Brooklyn Jew flew fifty two times
Such is the tale of Robert Rosenthal For such a hero he was not that tall But he had more fighting heart then us all Take his example if duty should call
