When Mendelssohn composed for the organ, he turned for inspiration to the musical style of the late Baroque period, especially the music of J.-S. Bach. He composed Three Preludes and Fugue op. 37 (dedicated to Thomas Atwood) and Six Sonatas op. 65 dedicated to Dr. F. Schlemmer. These pieces are basic repertoire works for every organist where the composer emulated late Baroque with considerable success. Here is an arrangement for string quartet of the central movement - andante - of the Third Sonata op.65/3.
