Domenico Scarlatti wrote the Sonata in C minor as a technical exercise for the harpsichord. It was first published in 1739 in a collection of 30 sonatas dedicated to King John V of Portugal and was probably intended for the king's daughter, Barbara, whom he was teaching at the time. Although Scarlatti wrote at least 555 sonatas, only these 30 were published under his direction in his lifetime.

This sonata is listed by Kirkpatrick as #11. Other catalogues list it as #352 (Longo), #67 (Pastelli) and #17 (Czerny).

The tempo is variously given as Molto Moderato to Allegro in different keyboard editions. My suggestions for tempo and articulation are representative of common performance practice in keeping with the requirements of wind quintet style and differ from the faster, lighter approach for the harpsichord.
