Beethoven had already acquired the reputation of being a notable improviser at the piano at 11 years. His first three sonatas for piano appeared in 1795/6. This sonata is his first, Opus 2, No 1.

This orchestration takes its instrumentation from Beethoven`s early symphonies, even though the first was not published until he was 27, (first performance at 30). I have tried to give this piano sonata an `orchestral feel`, which of course is the whole point of the exercise.

I have taken some liberties, notably writing out all ornaments and embellishments. This at least gives accurate playback, and may also possibly ensure safety, and some accuracy in performance, if not what Beethoven`s own traditional notation purveys.
