The more diatonic main theme (which seems to me to once again invoke the ghost of Poulenc) is contrasted with a more angular "B" theme with harmonies in fifths and sevenths. The central section is slower and more introspective. For its final appearance, the main theme is transformed into a tango, followed by a coda which recollects the central section and then the "B" theme – although it seems to take the flute and piano a while to agree on what key they are supposed to be playing in! The rondo closes with a brief reference to the opening bars.
