This sonata for clarinet and piano is in four movements. The first moment, in sonata form, comprises bucolic themes that seem put off by some jazz-influenced harmony. The second movement, a scherzo, draws its material from a movement of a piece (Monologues) I had previously written for bass clarinet. Movement three draws inspiration from the folk song settings of Vaughan-Williams. The finale, which might be described as a disobedient polka, romps home with gusto.
