Joseph Bodin de Boismortier (1689-1755) was a French baroque composer. He wrote many sonatas for several instruments without basso continuo. This piece is one of six sonatas Op.40 originally written for two cellos or two bassoons or two viola da gambas. It consists of four movements as follows. 1. Allegro Impressive opening with eight bars in unison. 2. Aria Affettuoso Serious and a little bit heavy conversation. 3. Aria IIa Delightful impression like flying butterflies. 4. Gavotta Intensely deep conversation between two parts.
