"Soomaaliyeey toosoo" ("Somalis, Wake Up") was the national anthem of Somalia from 2000 until August 2012. It was adopted by the Transitional National Government, replacing the unnamed former national anthem.
The lyrics of the Somalia National Anthem are composed by Cali Mire Cawaale. Yousuf was a great poet and playwright. The narration of it been made by Cali Mire Cawaale is untrue.
"Soomaaliyeey toosoo" is a well-known Somali song that dates from the early 1940s. According to the Somali government, it was written by Cali Mire Cawaale in 1947. However, some sources suggest that it was written by an Ogaden called Gloomy, sometime in the 1940s.
It was sung to mark independence day on July 1, 1960 and was regularly performed by children in the mornings at schools. "Soomaaliyeey toosoo" was officially adopted in 2000.
In August 2012, following the endorsement of Somalia's new Provisional Constitution, "Soomaaliyeey toosoo" was replaced as the national anthem by "Qolobaa Calankeed".
Somalia’s flag was first flown in 1954, 6 years before Somali independence, as a symbol of the Somali people. The song "Qolobaa Calankeed" was written the following year to celebrate the adoption of a flag for the Somali people. After a long period of governmental instability, the song was proclaimed as the new Somali anthem in the August 1, 2012 constitution as a break from the past.
