Henri Klickmann wrote this charming rag for piano in 1917 in stark contrast to the horrors of war raging around the world. What a great opening or encore piece to win over any audience.
At (quarter = 96) it will be clean and sophisticated but runs the risk of sounding stodgy. At (quarter = 108), all the crazy slapstick humour becomes evident. I have heard it played at (quarter = 120) but this speed requires incredible technique to be convincing. It must be played lightly, over-emphasizing the dynamic changes and accents without feeling scrambled.
It is a challenge at a higher speed but well worth the effort.
