Cesar Antonovich Cui wrote "’Slava’ on Guard" in 1915 as a patriotic march-past. Although the original was for "military wind orchestra," the original band version is not to be found. The only extant copy is an arrangement for piano four-hands by Konstantin Chernov in the Russian State Library. It is from that version that I have made this arrangement for modern concert band. The is a programmatic work describing the naval vessel "Slava" ("Glory"). It begins with a patriotic hymn, a bugle call to duty, on patrol, a bugle call to quarters, dangerous seas, a bugle call to secure from quarters, and a triumphal return home to "Mother Russia" to the tune of the original patriotic hymn.
