To complete the triptych of carols for 2018, a jolly, slightly wonky, perhaps drunken setting of lines from “A Christmas Caroll, maid by Sir Richard Shanne, Priest” as in the Oxford Book of Carols. It swings nervously between various time signatures, with the joy of a Wassail, and cries of “Gaudia”; the choir relish the opportunity to sing a carol with the word ‘astronomy’ in it; as it starts to veer out of control, the harmonies change, the choir gets it wrong, but still they sing “Gaudia”, ever more loudly, and then increasing in pitch, before a raucous, rousing ending.

“The Suffolk Carols” are for the Suffolk Singers, whom I am honoured to call my friends. The Carols are the idea and fruit of the work of Alma Gower, Martin Corrall, Beverley Vankoningsveld, and others, for the annual Suffolk Singers Choral Workshop, held at Woodbridge School in November 2018, and sung in concert by the Suffolk Singers in Bury St Edmunds in December 2018, directed by Claire Weston.
