"Sing Joyfully Unto God" is a choral anthem with text based on Psalm 81, with words including references to Trumpet, Tambourine, Harp and Viol, so very "jolly". Byrd was from Catholic stock but during his life he would write for both Protestant and Catholic dynasties, in Latin and in English, and for both secular and religious performance. He was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal where he shared his organ playing duties with Thomas Tallis, his former tutor, and together with Tallis was granted royal patronage from Elizabeth I.

This arrangement is for 1 Eb (with alternative Bb part provided), 4 Bbs, 1 Alto (with alternative Bb part), 1 Bass with optional 2nd Bass, Contra Alto and Contra Bass parts, so a minimum requirements of 6 Bbs and 1 Basses.
