The first two of the composer’ three Sinfoniettas date from the early 1980s and are scored for brass-band. (Scores of these might possibly be available from Ty Cerdd; at any rate, the scores are no longer in the composer’s possession. Both Sinfonietta No.1 and No.2 were perfomed by the Parc & Dare Brass Band and were broadcast on Radio 3.) Sinfonietta No.3, however, is scored for small orchestra and is cast in three movements. It was written in 2013 especially for, and was entered in, the last Uuno Klami Composition Competition.
Unsurprisingly, it won no prize!
The first movement is, necessarily, of the three the symphonically weightiest, making use of a compressed sonata-form to contrast the cellular rhythmic first theme with a more relaxed second idea presented with anapaestic (or anti-dactyl) accompaniment. Much of the design - in both large and small-scale - revolves and involves quartal harmony around a tritonal axis (an idea much in vogue with Finnish composers such as Kokkonen). Compression of the form occurs with ideas speeded up and, later, in simultaneous recapitulation: the movement ends quietly (with a little hommage to Sibelius), the main idea of which is only resolved at the end of the Finale.
