This is one of my favourite choral works by Palestrina. The beautiful contrapuntal writing transcribes well for winds and is an excellent teaching tool for intermediate players learning the art of playing polyphony. I have indicated lines to bring out, but these should be subtle, and musical sensibility will dictate how the lines interact.

This motet comes from Book 2 of his Motecta festorum which was published posthumously in Venice in 1604. The original text is taken from Psalm 42: “As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God”.

Enjoy!
