This Sicilienne was written in 1893 as part of the incidental music for Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. The chamber music version, Op. 78 dates from 1898. Faure later orchestrated it for incorporation into the incidental music for the play Pelléas et Mélisande, Op. 80.
Great care must be taken with dynamics to bring out the melodic lines and to create the wavelike ebb and flow that Faure intended.
