The title given by Cui was "Mes vers fuiraient…" (Мои стихи прилетали….My verses would flee…) This charming little poem by Victor Hugo, dated 1841, has also been set to music by Reynaldo Hahn and Alain Jacques. Literal translation (AJ):
1. My verses would flee, gentle and frail, Towards your garden so beautiful, If my verses had wings, Wings like a bird!
2. They would fly, sparks, Towards your hearth that laughs, If my wings had wings, Wings like the witts!
3. Near you, pure and loyal, They would run up, day and night, If my verses had wings, Wings like Love!
