The music of this song has been attributed some times to Eustache de Caurroy, "maître de la chapelle royale" under Henri IV, and some times to Gilliers, the official provider of "vaudeville". The words have also been attributed often to Antoine de Bourbon, king of Navarre, and to various other authors including Ronsard. This exquisite little song was used the next century by Moliere in his play, Le Misanthrope, which contributed to its preservation.
