This is the first of a planned series of "short essays," epigrammatic pieces for a small orchestra, with piano and jazz bass soloists. ("Barcarolle" is another movement of the same suite.) I held off publishing initially because it seemed too stravinskyan; now I hear the abrupt shifts and narrative principles differently, and have some faith in this little story. It's enthusiastically dedicated to Jay Anthony Gach.
