About this composition:
Shadows of Paris (2016) for Saxophone and Piano was commissioned by saxophonist Cory Barnfield for his second album. It was inspired by and written for the victims of the terrorist attacks in Paris on Novemeber 13, 2015. This composition is programmatic in the sense that it illustrates the emotions surrounding a person’s longing to spend one last day with the people he lost in these terrible attacks. Beginning with isolation, the music develops from a single melodic theme into extremely complex texts and rhythms which allude to the transition into a nostalgic dream. Although there is no specific setting for this sequence, the idea to incorporate subtle rock-like rhythms and jazz harmonies came from the fact that one of these attacks took place in the Bataclan Theatre, a venue popularized by French rock concerts. After exiting the dream sequence, the music returns to the lonely themes from the beginning of the piece and concludes as the individual is portrayed as walking off into the shadows in the streets, leaving behind the ghastly memories of that dreadful day.
