This bright, airy piece is Carolan's best-known and most often performed composition. This version of the tune is the one most commonly played by traditional musicians and it differs considerably from that published by Donal O'Sullivan in his splendid two volume life and times of the composer. Carolan would have heard a considerable amount of Italian music (by Corelli, Geminiani etc) in the 'Big Houses' that he visited, and this piece is thought to have been his musical response to the great vogue of Italian music in Ireland during his lifetime.
