Turlough Carolan (1670- 1738) was one of the best-known harper/composers of Gaelic Ireland.Blind as a result of smallpox, he was educated by Mrs MacDermott Roe, wife of one of the historic chiefs of Connacht and, aged 18, set off around Ireland, visiting the Great Houses. In these he was welcomed as an artist and,in return for the patronage received, composed both songs and harp music in praise of his patrons.Captain Sudley, an English officer, married Carolan's daughter and this is the piece he composed in their honour. Thomas Moore composed the poem 'O the sight entrancing' to be sung to this tune.
