Use: weddings, marriage themed services

Set Me A Seal On Your Heart was written in 1991 for a family wedding.

Stanza 2 applies the symbols of Yahweh’s revelation of the Covenant with Israel (the dreams of Jacob, Joseph and Elijah, the cloud that led Israel through the desert, and the burning bush vision of Moses) to marriage.

In Stanza 3 “Love’s circular sign” is, of course, a wedding ring. The refrain and stanza 4 derive from the Song of Songs.

The refrain is easily learnt by a congregation. The verse are usually song by soloists, with male and female voices alternating stanzas.

The verse melody quotes from the ancient Irish tune best known as the song “She Moved through The Fair”.

The introduction and bridging passage were originally written for flute but another folk instrument, e.g. fiddle, would be equally effective.
