My 'Serenade for Strings' was written especially for the Tyneside Chamber Orchestra during the summer of 2003. It is in three movements. In the first a somewhat ascerbic violin melody floats over a threateningly active viola/cello line. Near the end the tension is relaxed somewhat with a sucession of major chords.
In the slow movement an initially simple homophonic tune proliferates into a more contrapuntal section before reverting to the simplicity of the opening.
For the finale I lighted on some discarded material from a wind quintet. Here a vigorous motif in compound time alternates with a more pleading theme. Towards the end of the movement the former leads into a four part fuge followed by a broadening out of the pleading theme and a final appearence of the initial motiv.

Well laid out parts, and music which looks both interesting and approachable. Will be fun to try it as a string quintet with a view to getting a larger string orchestra together.
It took a little while to figure out how to print the parts, which was a slightly clunky process.
