Chester Arthur, the US President who spurred Sousa to supplant Hail to the Chief, never lived to hear the music Sousa composed to take its place. When the US Marine band first played it for an 1888 Capital parade, Sousa timed it so that they played the trio just as they passed the reviewing stand. Of course it made the intended effect on President Harrison and the official party.
