I wrote this piece during a recent workshop week where I was coaching young composers.
I wanted to show them how you can write a piece that’s easy to play but still reflects its source of inspiration and changes the mood of the room when you play it to an audience.
The constancy of the sea is reflected in the constancy of the bass line - octave Gs throughout. The unusual use of the sustain pedal (depressed throughout) reflects how nature deals with pollution in our seas - gradually diluting until the pollutant is barely perceptible. The G# is the musical pollution! I have left the dynamic contrast up to the performer - get louder and softer as your mood takes you.
I hope you enjoy playing this piece - it’s easy once you’ve worked it out and very comfortable to play. Relax and enjoy your performance, thinking of the waves lapping on your favourite beach. If you manage to relax, you’ll find that your audience relaxes with you and you’ll transport them to their favourite seaside place…
