Franz Schubert (1797-1828) is one of the best art song composers the world has seen, both in terms of quanitity (over 600 songs) and quality. Die Forelle (The Trout), D. 550, was written and edited 1817-1821, with the 1820 version being published as op. 32 in 1827. In this song, Schubert sets a poem by Christin Friedrich Daniel Schubart (1739-1791) about a man catching a trout in a stream. The playful piano accompaniment portrays the carefree trout before he is caught, and the straightforward melody completes the effect. Schubert later incorporated this music into his string quintet (D. 667). My arrangement is transposed up a half step, but you can transpose as desired using the buttons above the score.
