This piece depicts Feanor, one of Tolkien's most memorable characters from his earlier mythology of Middle Earth. Feanor was one of the greatest of the Eldar, the Elves who lived in the far west before the changing of the world and the sundering of the seas between Middle Earth and Valinor. He was a fiery spirit, impetuous, bold, full of energy but also quick to anger, and he was also the greatest craftsman of all time, creating the holy jewels - the Silmarils - with which much of the later history of Middle Earth was bound up. He came to grief trying to regain the Silmarils which had been stolen by Melkor, the 'fallen' Vala, and departed from this world long ages ago.
