This piece illustrates one of the most remarkable passages from Tolkien's mythology - the creation of 'Arda' (the Universe) by Iluvatar (the One God) by means of music. Iluvatar gives out a great musical theme, and then the Ainur (the demi-urges or archangels) take up the theme and elaborates to it; this process actually creates the world. However, Melkor, one of the Ainur (later called 'Morgoth' - 'the Great Enemy') wants to create his own themes, full of pride, energy and anger, in opposition to Iluvatar; his themes disrupt and disturb the great music. Twice Iluvatar begins the music again, and at the end of the third time He brings the music, and Melkor's rebellion, to an end with a great sweeping final chord.
