An arrangement for String Orchestra, of Schumann's Piano work entitled Scenes from Childhood or Kinderszenen.

The decline of patronage structures for musicians during the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries resulted in the growing perception of the musical work as an autonomous object, which necessitated new meanings for music. The last movement of Robert Schumann's "Kinderszenen", op. 15, 1838, entitled "Der Dichter spricht" marks perhaps the first realization by any composer of the autonomy of the musical work. Schumann compensated for this autonomy by bringing himself overtly into the work with that title, as well as both attaching and detaching this movement from the rest of "Kinderszenen" with a variety of effective musical devices.

Scenes From Childhood (Kinderscenen), Opus 15 is a set of 13 pieces of music that Schumann wrote for Piano in 1838. They are his reminiscences of childhood and have been beautifully scored for Brass Quintet by Keith Terrett. The most well known of the movements is Tråumerei (Dreaming) and has been used in movies to portray love scenes because of its tenderness and beauty. The music is for advanced performers and the collection contains close to 20 minutes of some very sublime & poetic music. Any of these pieces can be inserted into a recital program.
