This glorious work translates to the double bass superbly; the warmth of the instrument with its deep, rich sonority makes so much more of the solo line. I am sure Elgar would have done it if he had thought about it! The accompaniment has been reduced to avoid swamping the sound of the bass, as its lower pitch can be lost sometimes.
