Rondoletto II is a rare example of Darrs virtuosic writing. Most of Darrs compositions do not emphasize the virtuosic style, but instead convey an intimate and introverted approach. The piece was probably first published in 1903 in Der Guitarrefreund, Heft 4. Philip Bone, in his book The Guitar and Mandolin, wrote that Darr composed a study in e-minor and two Rondolettos for solo guitar. This piece could be either or, or one and the same. At first glance, the piece seems to be a straightforward, very symmetrical arpeggio study, similar to something Ferdinand Carulli would have written. Upon closer examination, however, several nice surprises await the auditor. From the start of the piece, a drone-like downbeat accent is established. The end of the first period disturbs this pattern by emphasizing three beats per measure (mm.15-16). Also, the e-minor add flat 9 chord (last inversion) in measure 25 is an unusual, yet sonorous, chord for this time period. Technically, the piece is pretty straightforward; the difficulty comes in managing the extreme dynamic markings between ff and pp. The fingerings in mm. 69-75 displays Darrs through understanding of the guitars complexities. For more information on Darr see my DMA research paper "ADAM DARR (1811-1866) THE CAREER AND WORKS OF A GERMAN ROMANTIC GUITARIST AND ZITHERIST."
