This hymn was written by Isaac Watts and published in his "Hymns and Spiritual Songs" (1707). It is generally recognized as one of the greatest English hymn texts. In the U.S.A. these words are commonly sung to the tune "Hamburg"; in Great Britain and Canada "Rockingham" is the usual choice. In 1790, Edward Miller published the tune in his "The Psalms of David for the Use of Parish Churches", giving it the name "Rockingham".
