This is a song i wrote as part of a group music theatre project in which we adapted the story of Hans Christian Anderson's classic fairytale, "The Snow Queen" for theatre. The little girl in the story, Gerda, has embarked on a search for her dear childhood friend Kay. At this point, she finds herself at the edge of a river, asking the river whether it has seen Kay. In return for the information, Gerda will offer the river her most valuable asset - her precious red shoes. The piano accompaniment should maintain a smooth flow at all times - depicting a flowing river. In the middle there is a temperory change of mood to an agitato section in which the river responds to Gerda's pleas for help. However, this is short lived and the material soon returns to a natural flow before finishing 'magically' in the Lydian mode.
