I’ve started to redo the settings that are paraphrased and make them verbatim. It really seems like there’s a movement toward being true to the text in the Liturgy of the Word - which is a good thing.
I actually had someone complain to the pastor that "the musician changed the word of God." So ever since then I’ve been paranoid to do a paraphrased setting. Which in a way is kind of a shame, because some of the most enduring and widely utilized psalm settings are paraphrased. (Shepherd Me, O God by Marty Haugen comes immediately to mind). So at funerals, are we not supposed to honor the request of the bereaved to have that setting sung, because it’s not verbatim?
I guess the bottom line is that we’re servants to the Lord in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, so we need to be obedient.
